Elbow Pain

Activities that involve gripping objects repeatedly like in case of driving, construction work or line work, etc. can result in a condition called the Tennis Elbow or Epicondylitis.

Tennis elbow causes pain on the outside or lateral side of the elbow. This condition emanates from inflammation or injury to the tendons of forearm muscles at their attachment point to the protruding bone in the elbow joint called the lateral epicondyle. The scientific term for tennis elbw being epicondylitis means an inflammation of the epicondyle. Sometimes, the injury occurs on the inside or medial side of the elbow and is called the Golfer’s Elbow or medial epicondylitis. This is very rare and not as commonly occurring as lateral epicondylitis.

Causes

There are many activities that can cause pain in the elbows. Let’s discuss some of the major causes of the condition below-

  • Lateral Epicondylitis- It is caused by any activity where the forearm is used for repeatedly gripping objects in the same manner. It can be washing windows, operating on a manual screwdriver or playing the backhand of tennis.
  • Medial Epicondylitis- Also known as Golfer’s elbow, this condition develops due to constant strain on the muscles of the elbow from prolonged work. It does not necessarily have to be playing golf, but simple household or office jobs like carrying of heavy bags, knitting, chopping food, and/or computer work using improper wrist and arm posture.
  • Olecaron bursitis- This is the condition where the bursa at the tip of the elbow gets inflammated due to sudden injury. It may be caused due to postural defects while doing strenuous work for prolonged periods. Even faulty techniques while playing sports can result in injury.

Any kind of injury to the elbow can significantly cause impairment in movement and inhibit daily activities. Patients complain of the inability to bend elbows and lift as light an object as a pen or a cup of coffee.

Treatment

Epicondylitis is a condition that rarely resolves on its own accord and may require treatment. The conventional treatment of elbow pain or epicondylitis is with ice packs, resting the involved elbow, aspirin and anti-inflammatory medications like naproxen (Naprosyn), diclofenac (Voltaren), and ibuprofen (Motrin). Cortisone injections are given for persistent pain. These are all pain-relief medications and instead of treating the cause, they only provide respite from the pain. A qualified healthcare professional such as a chiropractor can determine the exact cause of the problem and initiate the proper care and treatment. Chiropractic treatment modalities include ultrasound, electrotherapy, massage, hot and cold treatments, bracing and home stretching and exercises. Chiropractic adjustments have proven extremely effective in the overall management of this problem.

Scientific Treatment for Elbow Pain

A revolutionary technique in the treatment of elbow pain is the use of the ProAdjuster. It is a niche Chiropractic invention that has radically transformed the way practitioners used to diagnose and treat injuries. In case of both minor subluxations and major injuries, the ProAdjuster very efficiently gets to the root of the problem. Injuries can strain the surrounding muscles and causing damage to the “soft tissue” around the disturbed area of the elbow. The ProAdjuster uses smart computerized software, to determine the amount of stiffness or fluid along the joint. Using Hi-Tech Computer sensors of the device, the chiropractor can measure the response from each muscle joints along the injured area, while interactive graphical charts make it easier to locate the exact inflammation area. After a comprehensive analysis of the injury, the ProAdjuster is used to treat the injury by placing it on the problem muscle and using its series of controlled taps to align the joint along the optimal position.
