What’s a Slipped Disc?

slipped-disc-chiropractor bowmanvilleOur spine is a complicated part of the body. A slipped disc occurs when a disc in the spine suffers from a rupture. When this happens, a small amount of gel leaks out from the rupture and this leads to extra pressure on the nerves that surround the disc. Because of extra pressure, the person suffers from a lot of pain. Slipped discs often affect the lumbar or the lower portion of the spine, leading to lower back pain and sciatica or pain in the lower extremities. It is relatively rare that a slipped disc happens on the cervical (first seven vertebrae) or the thoracic (middle spine) area.

Age is one of the biggest reasons that a disc will rupture, as you start losing your water content inside the disc, making it less flexible and more liable to rupturing.

Symptoms:

1. Numbness and Weakness
2. Issues with Bladder control or Bowel Control
3. Pain in different parts of the body

There are no scientific causes leading to a slipped disc, but it is mostly a result of wear and tear of the spine.

Slip Disc Treatment:

A slipped disc, also known as herniated disc, may need an anti-inflammatory treatment based on the intensity of the pain. Consult with your doctor in Bowmanville before taking this type of medication. Treatment for a slipped disc falls under two categories, the “conservative” and surgical treatments. Surgery is not the first option. It is only considered when all other alternative treatments fail.

Can Chiropractic Treatment Help with Slipped Disc?

A certified chiropractor is trained to detect which part of the spine has a protruded or ruptured disc based on physical examinations. They will look at several factors, such as the reflexes of the patient, muscle strength, or sensation on affected area especially on the lower extremities. The aim of chiropractic therapy is to stabilize the bones and muscles of the body in the best possible natural position in order to give the body appropriate time to heal naturally.
